How Film Photography Contests Work
A film photography contest invites photographers to submit images captured on analog film under a specific theme, within a set time window. Entries are reviewed, published to a public gallery, and voted on by the community. Winners are determined by peer voting with a limited number of votes per person.
Contest Format
Neoanaloglab Foto runs a weekly contest: a 7-day submission window followed by 7 days of voting. Each contest has a theme — a creative prompt that guides what kind of photographs to make. Themes range from literal to abstract, and are announced in advance.
How to Submit
Visit the current contest page, click Submit Photo, and fill in your details: email address, photographer name, photo title, film stock and camera, and optionally your country, lens, developer, lab and the story behind the frame. Upload one photo per contest. Recommended long edge is 3000 to 6000 pixels, file size under 30 MB. After submitting you receive a receipt email, and your photo goes straight to the review queue — nothing else to do.
Voting System
Each entrant's email address receives 6 votes per contest; only that edition's entrants can vote. You can change your votes freely until you press “Confirm my votes” — once confirmed, your ballot is locked for the edition (unconfirmed votes still count when voting closes). Vote counts are hidden during the voting period — this prevents strategic voting and keeps the focus on the photographs themselves. At the end of the voting window, rankings are calculated and published.
Results and the Film Gallery
When voting closes, rankings are determined by total votes received. Winners are notified by email — make sure the address you enter with can receive mail, because an entry we cannot reach through its submission email is treated as having waived the prize. Full results are published on the public results page, and every published frame stays browsable in the Film Gallery, where you can filter by photographer, country, theme, camera, film stock or lab. Every contest becomes part of the permanent record of the community.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I enter a contest?
- Visit the current contest page, click Submit Photo, fill in your photographer name, email, and photo title, then upload your image. One entry per person per edition, and it cannot be changed after uploading. A receipt email confirms it went through, and your submission enters the review queue as a candidate for the edition's selection — no further steps.
- Why has my photo not appeared after submitting?
- Only each edition's selected works (up to 10, chosen after review and voting) appear in the public gallery — a valid entry that is not selected is never published, and entries stay private until the edition's selection is made.
- How are winners selected?
- Winners are determined entirely by community voting. Each entrant gets exactly 6 votes per contest. The photograph with the most votes at the end of the voting window wins. Vote counts are hidden during the voting period to prevent bandwagon effects. Results are published immediately after voting closes.
