On the first day of the Lunar New Year, the old street rang with gongs and drums. The dragon dance opened its giant mouth and leaped high to catch the colorful ball suspended in midair. The crowd erupted instantly, countless hands and phones raised upward. They were documenting tradition—and vying for good luck in the new year. Modern screens and ancient auspicious beasts collide on the street; amid the clamor, all of it is the ordinary townsfolk's most steaming-hot hopes for life.
